This article is designed as a glossary of mail merge markers for Thank Yous in BigSIS. To learn more about how to create Thank You Letters, please see this article for a step-by-step guide.
Mail merge markers are placeholders that pull specific data from BigSIS' records and into your Thank You Letter. For Example, the marker <<FirstName>> will populate with the donor's first name when you generate the letter.
Here's an example of a Thank You letter using mail merge markers:
Once the letter is generated, it will look like this:
Mail Merge Markers Per Type of Letter
Initial Thank You (Gifts, Pledges, Recur) - Letter Per Donation
<<Address1>> Address Line 1 (e.g. 1234 Main St.)
<<Address2>> Address Line 2 (e.g. Apt B)
TIP: Place this next to <<Address1>>. If you place it underneath, you'll get a blank spot for donors with no <<Address2>> data
<<AddressGreeting>> This is the greeting the system generates automatically that might traditionally appear after "Dear" in a letter send to an address of someone. It is generated from the first names of all guardians with active person records who are marked to receive mail at the address. If none of the residents are guardians, then the system ignores guardianship and generates this based on the remaining rules (i.e. active person record and marked to receive mail) (e.g. John and Jane)
<<AddressSalutationFirstName>> Address Salutations are generated automatically by the system and comprised of two parts (the address salutation FirstName + the address salutation LastName). Address salutations appear on mailing labels when addressing the adult living at that address. The <AddressSalutationFirstName>> should only be used with <<AddressSalutationLastName>> because if the adults in the house have different last names, that will be reflected when using the <<AddressSalutationFirstName>> mail marker (e.g. Jane Smith and John Doe would appear as Jane Smith and John. When you use it with the
<<AddressSalutationLastName>> marker, it will appear as Jane Smith and John Doe)
<<AddressSalutationLastName>> To be used with <<AddressSalutationFirstName>>, please see above (e.g. "Smith")
<<AmountOfPledgeRemaining>> Amount of unpaid pledge payments (e.g. $0.00)
<<AmountPaid>> Amount paid, not to be confused with <<DonatedAmount>>. <<DonatedAmount>> includes pledges regardless of whether or not they've been paid. <<AmountPaid>> only looks at payments and ignores pledged (or promised) amounts
<<AmountPaidLastYear>> Amount Paid but only for last year (see above)
<<AmountPaidThisYear>> Amount Paid but only for this year (see above)
<<AppealAmountRaised>> How much of the Appeal has been raised thus far which is something that is set up when creating the Appeal (e.g. $10,000)
<<AppealCode>> The code used to identify the Appeal which is something that is set up when creating the Appeal (NOTE: You will probably not be using this marker in a thank you as this code is primarily used for reporting purposes only) (e.g. UA1819)
<<AppealGoalAmount>> The Appeal Goal which is something that is set up when creating the Appeal (e.g. $10,000)
<<AppealTitle>> The title of the Appeal (e.g. Unrestricted Appeal)

<<CountryCode>> The country in which the Donor lives (e.g. United States)

<<DonatedAmount>> The total amount given NOTE: When you use this marker with Letter per Donation, it will show the individual amount of each donation (one letter per donation), however, since this letter is per donor profile, it will tally all the donations in the thanked bucket and return the total amount (e.g. if there are 4 donations of $50 in the Unthanked Bucket, then this marker will reflect a Donated Amount of $200)
<<DonorProfileGreeting>> This is different from the Address Greeting. It's still calculated but it's calculated based on the people in the Donor Profile NOT the people at the address.
